MORE THAN WATER

Apart from providing an added source of income to the dealers, profits from the water stations also fund development projects chosen by the communities themselves to address their most important needs such as medical aid, education and livelihood programs. Part of the profits also serves as a seed fund for future water stations in other communities.

To help oversee the communities’ development, Waterhope has partnered with various microfinance institutions and NGOs for the following programs

HEALTH

Nutrition Program
One of the needs identified in the poor communities that are served by Waterhope is better nutrition education to help reduce malnutrition among children. A nutrition education with feeding program will improve the understanding of the people in the community on what constitutes the proper nutrition and appropriate diet for good health.  The program will encourage motivation to make the best food choice available to them.  This means that learning shall be linked with practical action involving families and community participation to establish partnership for possible long-term health and nutrition program.

Promotion of Women’s Health
In the aim to provide knowledge, values, skills that enable the Waterhope clients maintain their good health status, sustain productivity and income, and improve their family life, Waterhope undertakes promotion of  women’s health such as the breast cancer awareness. The program hopes to offer a better understanding about causes and prevention thereby allying the fear and hopelessness that cancer brings.

PROVISION OF MEDICAL, DENTAL, AND OTHER RELATED SERVICES

Medical Mission
Access to affordable health care service has been a challenge for urban poor families.  Minor ailments when left untreated, can turn into serious conditions.  Waterhope facilitates arrangement for surgical missions in the community to provide treatments on minor surgery, dental treatment, vision check, diabetic testing and general consultations.  Waterhope believes that a household member restored to good health can become a productive and contributing member in a family that can be vulnerable due to poverty.

LITERACY PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS AND OUT-OF-SCHOOL-YOUTHS

Adopt-a-Day Care/Pre-school
One of the concerns in the Waterhope communities is the increasing number of out-of-school youth and children. As a response to this need, Waterhope collaborates with the Religious of the Good Sheperd (RGS) nuns to  establish a play and learn school called “Headstart”.  This partnership was born out of the collective assessment of the RGS nuns and concerned mothers that a regular pre-school is a good strategy to help empower the children towards love for learning and creativity.

Waterhope partners with Christian Community Transformaiton Visions of Hope for a pre-school program called “BLESS”  (Basic Literacy Education and Support System). This program integrates Christian values into the regular basic learning modules to help children in the urban communities develop their confidence , ability and capacity to cope up with pressure of school requirements.  Classes are held at the Waterhope community center and children are provided free drinking water as well as school materials donated by Waterhope partners.

Read-Along Program
Reading is a pleasure that many poor children in the communities are deprived of.  The Read-Along Program aims to make story books available to children in the community and to encourage them to develop the habit and love for reading. Waterhope partners donated books and shelves to various facilities and volunteered their time to read stories to children in the communites.  The Waterhope stations are open to housing similar program in its community centers.

Out of School Youth Mentoring Program

In most Waterhope communities, the out-of-school youth are visible. However, they have been disempowered due to lack of proper education and opportunities for development. Waterhope would like to be able to mentor these young people the skills and values that would be helpful to give them access to livelihood and employment.

LEGAL EDUCATION AND CONSULTATION

Legal Mission

Engaging communities served by Waterhope through legal education on topics ranging from basic human rights to family law, as well as other basic and practical legal issues. This is undertaken through a series of mini-lectures with relevant Q & A conducted by Waterhope legal expert-partners to provide basic information on legal rights and duties of community members and some basic para-legal orientation for the staff of partner-NGOs.
